The official formula
- Employees' Pension: average standard remuneration × payment rate. Payment rate = pension rate (18.3%) × ½ × number of months used (6, 12, … up to 60), rounded to one decimal: 0.5, 1.1, 1.6, 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 3.8, 4.4, 4.9, 5.5.
- National Pension: monthly premium in the fiscal year of your last payment × ½ × months used. For FY2026 the maximum is ¥17,920 × ½ × 60 = ¥537,600.
- Cap: up to 60 months (5 years) count, for people whose last coverage month is April 2021 or later.
- Tax: 20.42% income tax is withheld from the Employees' Pension lump-sum (not from the National Pension one). You can apply for a refund by filing a tax return choosing retirement-income taxation; usually you appoint a tax representative (nōzei kanrinin) before leaving Japan.
Planned change (not yet in force): the 2025 pension reform law plans to raise the cap from 5 years to 8 years and to stop payments while a re-entry permit is still valid. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare says this will take effect within 4 years of the law's promulgation (June 2025); the date has not been set. This calculator uses the current 5-year cap.
